—THE ART—
My name is Bethany Rose Art! I am a multidisciplinary artist. I create oil paintings, murals, live paintings, art lessons, and painting meetups.
LOVE CAT
“Love Cat” is a mural I was given the opportunity to paint by Paint
The Void. Paint the Void is a fiscally sponsored 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit organization. The project was born from an idea to help keep artists
engaged and paid as guardians of hope and beauty, during a time of fear and
uncertainty. Building 180 and Art for Civil Discourse raised funds for artist grants as a response to COVID-19. They have facilitated the creation of over 100 murals in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland,. Paint the Void is funded through small individual donations, grants, and collaborations with larger institutions for permanent murals. Thanks to those and a GoFundMe that I ran to help cover the costs of creating this piece, “Love Cat” was born.
This is the first of many times we will see this adorable and surreal character. All the different parts of this creature can stand alone, but together they make something much greater and interesting. I think of this concept applied to the community here.
The corner that I was given is “Bluestone Lane Café”. It’s a very popular café that many relied on and loved going to on their way to work and throughout the day. I wanted my design to fill the space in that corner and create a feeling of “Here, right now” that was lost when its windows were boarded up.
There is a lot going on in the simple design, with its big bright blocks of color. People are going to see whatever they want in it. When I look at it I see a cat, a snail, a pickle, a bird, and more. It is fun and engaging, and has helped spark creative conversations.
I enjoy working with the spray paint because of the freedom and creative problem solving that comes with it. The bright color palette and exaggeration of form is something that is consistent in my work.
